How did your love for sailing begin? Why were you so determined to become a captain?
I think it was just in my blood, even though my family doesn’t have any particular affinity for the water. I grew up in Berlin, and even as a child, I was fascinated by every passenger ship I saw. Through the Youth Red Cross in Berlin, I had the opportunity at age ten to sail on the old sailing ships in the Netherlands. And that’s when I thought: Yeah, that would be perfect for me! Especially since there are so many women sailing in the Netherlands. Back then, I didn’t even know that sailing wasn’t all that popular among women in Germany.
I wanted to do the training, but my parents wouldn’t let me because they thought I should learn a “proper” trade, like banking or hotel management. So I studied art first and eventually ended up in the shipping industry after a few detours. I ended up doing the training later, together with my husband, at the maritime academy in Enkhuizen, after we already had children.
What’s your personal favorite spot on Usedom? Aside from the “Weisse Düne,” of course!
Personally, I find the lake landscape on Usedom very fascinating—Gothensee, Schmollensee, and so on. And I think the most beautiful part is the inland area toward Lieper Winkel. Especially the Neppermin region and everything beyond it—it’s a dreamlike spot that you also get to see on the island safari. Here, too, you get the feeling that you’re all alone in the world. I’ve even flown over the island in an ultralight plane, and the Usedom lake landscape looks absolutely incredible from the air!
Thank you very much for the interview!
