Admittedly, winter swimming in the Baltic Sea isn't for the faint of heart. Only die-hard water lovers can find something positive in this icy swimming experience. On Usedom, ice swimming events have a long tradition.

A Sense of Happiness After the Cold Shock

Sebastian Kneipp already knew as early as the mid-19th century that exposure to cold has a beneficial effect on health. Anyone who regularly takes a dip in ice-cold water trains their cardiovascular system and boosts their immune system. So it’s worth overcoming your inner resistance. And here’s another reason: winter swimming releases plenty of “happy hormones” and lifts your spirits immensely.

Ice Bathing Events on the Island of Usedom in 2026

Ice-bathing events have a long tradition on Usedom. In January and February, hundreds of intrepid ice bathers treat themselves to the ultimate cold shock at various ice-bathing events. Cheered on by a jubilant crowd, the daredevils—dressed in funny costumes—plunge into the cold water.

Under the theme “Winter Magic,” the Baltic Sea resort of Trassenheide offers a winter family experience from February 3 to 13. The highlight is the annual ice-swimming spectacle on February 7, when numerous cheerfully costumed swimmers bravely plunge into the icy Baltic Sea under the theme “Eis Eis Western.” Between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy a mix of entertainment, activities, and the popular ice-swimming fun. The focus is on the brave winter swimmers, for whom heated changing facilities, free drinks, and a snack will be provided. The traditional ice swimming event kicks off on the main beach of the Baltic Sea resort.

In the Baltic Sea resort of Koserow, winter swimming will take place for the 21st time on February 28 at the pier. While the ice swimmers jump into the cold Baltic Sea at 6 p.m. under floodlights and by torchlight, spectators warm up comfortably by the fire pit. In Koserow, too, the ice bathers come up with colorful costumes for their “ice swim,” complete with funny headwear and vibrant swimsuits. Afterward, all participants will receive a certificate of participation. Starting at 4 p.m., spectators can look forward to a lively program featuring live music and entertainment.
Anyone interested in participating should register by email with the Koserow Tourist Office at least one day before the event.
