A summer break for the theaters? Quite the opposite! On the island of Usedom, June through August is the peak cultural season. Night after night, the performers from the Vorpommersche Landesbühne and “Klassik am Meer” slip into their costumes and make locals and vacationers laugh, cry, and marvel.

Theater Highlights for 2024 on Usedom

This summer, the Vorpommersche Landesbühne will present two new open-air performances, seven plays, two fairy tales, and numerous guest performances in Zinnowitz, Heringsdorf, and Wolgast. In its 26th season, the “Klassik am Meer” ensemble invites audiences to the Feldsteinkirche in Koserow for two new productions.

To the "Weiße Muschel" on Lake Wolgast: Summer theater fun for the whole family

The Wolgast Harbor Festival will premiere the comedy "Zur weißen Muschel am Wolgastsee" on June 22. Director and playwright Birgit Lenz sets the action of this lively theatrical spectacle in a hotel on Lake Wolgast on the sunny island of Usedom. This summer open-air event for the whole family runs through August 24, every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, on the open-air stage at the Wolgast Harbor.

Vineta—The Splendor of the Depths: A Summer Theater Experience for the Whole Family

Starting June 28, the ensemble of the Vorpommersche Landesbühne will present “Vineta—The Splendor of the Depths” at the Ostseebühne Zinnowitz, telling a new and spectacular story about the legendary city of Vineta. Whether the golden city can be rescued from the depths of the Baltic Sea or whether only the “Glow of the Depths” will remain is not revealed. In any case, the audience can look forward to a spectacular stage show featuring dance, music, and laser effects. The 28 performances of the Vineta Festival will take place every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday on the Ostseebühne in Zinnowitz.

Comedies and children's theater at Chapeau Rouge and Blechbüchse

In addition to its summer open-air performances, the Vorpommersche Landesbühne offers a wide-ranging repertoire for the Gelbes Theater Blechbüchse in Zinnowitz and the Chapeau Rouge theater tent in Heringsdorf . In the red theater tent, top-notch entertainment is provided by, among others, the comedy “Hase Hase,” the solo show “Der Kontrabaß,” the crime comedy “Fisch zu viert,” and the play “The King’s Speech.” At the “Blechbüchse” in Zinnowitz, the comedies “Frau Müller muss weg” and “Ladies Night” are on the program. Even the youngest theatergoers will find something to enjoy. The cafeteria at the Theater Academy in Zinnowitz serves as a stage for numerous puppet shows, and at the “Chapeau Rouge,” two children’s plays—“An der Arche um acht” and “Pinocchio”—will also be performed.

Famous Artists Visit Heringsdorf and Zinnowitz

In addition to its own productions, the program features guest performances by Olaf Schubert, Dr. Gregor Gysi, the Herkuleskeule, Wladimir Kaminer, and the rock band Keimzeit. In addition to these longtime favorites, this summer will also feature new faces such as Thomas Rühmann, Winfried Glatzeder, and Lars Redlich.

Theatrical Classics Behind Church Walls

Every year in the Baltic Sea resort of Koserow, the sanctuary of the venerable fieldstone church is transformed into a theater stage. For 26 years, the “Klassik am Meer” series has been delighting audiences with theater classics featuring prominent casts. This summer, Henrik Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt” and Kurt Tucholsky’s “Schloss Gripsholm” will be performed at the Koserow church on a total of 20 evenings.

Peer Gynt—A Dramatic Poem by Henrik Ibsen

Directed by Philip Tiedemann (Berlin/Vienna), "Peer Gynt"— often referred to as the “Nordic Faust”—will be presented as a one-man show starring the popular actor Peter Bause. The play, which normally features a large cast, will be staged in Koserow as a monologue. It’s a challenge that the two lead actors have consciously taken on. The premiere of the one-man show is on July 5. Nine more performances will follow through September 12.

Gripsholm Castle: A Summer Story by Kurt Tucholsky

As its second new production, the ensemble brings the lighthearted, summery tale of Gripsholm Castle to the small stage in front of the church altar. In it, Tucholsky recounts a summer vacation in Sweden, with blue skies, sunshine, and the scent of the sea—a summer story tailor-made for the Koserow Amber Baths. However, a serious undertone is already palpable, as Tucholsky could already see the Nazi dictatorship looming on the horizon at that time. Yet even with his typewriter, he was unable to prevent the catastrophe. The play is directed by Berlin-based Angelika Perdelwitz, with artistic collaboration by Jürgen Kern. The premiere is on July 12. The play will be performed a total of ten times through September 13.
