Guests at the Steigenberger Grandhotel and Spa Heringsdorf can attest that Carolin Martens is the best esthetician. In December 2023, the young esthetician was honored by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce as the top graduate in all of Germany.

"It's so nice to do something good for people."

You’re from Schleswig-Holstein and a true northerner. How did you end up on the island of Usedom?

It was a bit of a detour. After graduating from high school, I didn’t want to move too far away at first. I had my sights set on Hamburg. But most hotels in Hamburg don’t offer training programs. So I started looking around the vacation regions along the North Sea and Baltic Sea for wellness hotels with beautiful spa areas. During my job application rounds, I also applied at the Steigenberger Hotel in Heringsdorf. I was immediately impressed by the hotel and felt right at home. I ended up canceling the job interview I had scheduled for the next day on Rügen. It’s about a four-hour drive home to Itzehoe. That’s still manageable, but I’m drawn back toward home. And because it’s so beautiful here, my family also loves to come visit.

What's it like to live as a young woman on this Baltic Sea island?

I think it’s really lovely here. I’m from a small town, so I feel very at home with rural life. My commute is short. That’s wonderful. In the summer, it’s a five-minute bike ride. There aren’t that many options for young people, but when I want to go out, I head to Świnoujście. Unfortunately, my favorite nightclub closed down a while ago. I’m sure I’ll get a taste of big-city life again someday.

What motivated you to train as a cosmetologist? What appeals to you about the profession?

It was a process. I got into it through various internships. It was important to me to do something with my hands. Preferably something creative and filigree. When I saw my sister cramming at her desk for her studies, I knew right away: That’s not for me. Dental technology—totally interesting, but I missed the variety and the contact with customers. With photography, I thought it might be hard to advance in the field unless you’re exceptional. I didn’t want that kind of pressure. My mom gave me the idea to become a cosmetologist. She’s a hairdresser, so I’ve been familiar with that world since I was a little kid. I love being close to people. It’s so wonderful to do something good for others. Every day is different. People bring so much variety. I never know who’ll be my next client. I can really let my creativity run wild, especially with decorative cosmetics.

You graduated at the top of your class. How does it feel to be Germany’s best cosmetologist?

It came as a complete surprise. When I received the invitation from the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce to the national awards ceremony in Berlin, I didn’t even realize it at first. “Do you even realize what this means?” was my family’s reaction. At the event, I found it really exciting to meet the other graduates. We had plenty of time to talk about our different professions. In total, the best apprentices from 200 professions were honored that evening. I had actually prepared very well for the exam. I’m ambitious and set high standards for myself. In exam situations, I simply don’t want to leave anything to chance. But it never would have occurred to me that I’d end up getting the highest score of all.

What cosmetic treatments do you offer at the Steigenberger Hotel? Do you have a favorite treatment that you’d particularly recommend?

The classics: manicures, pedicures, facials with exfoliation, massages, and eyelash and eyebrow tinting. I also offer full-body exfoliation and wraps, as well as partial-body massages. I just completed advanced training in ultrasound therapy. This technique can stimulate certain processes—such as blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, and collagen synthesis—and improve the skin’s appearance. Facial treatments are what I enjoy most. It’s wonderful when I can help with specific skin issues and offer advice. Plus, I find that facial treatments are a wonderful way for me to unwind. When I give clients a facial massage while soothing wellness music plays, it’s therapeutic for me, too.

Is being a cosmetologist a typically female profession, or are there male colleagues as well?

We have a colleague on our team who is currently training to become a cosmetologist. I can’t say what the ratio of men to women is in our profession, but it’s definitely on the rise. The topic of skincare is becoming increasingly relevant for men as well. I think it’s great that the image of men is changing and that it’s no longer “uncool” for men to take care of themselves.

Overcoming Challenges & Creating Your Own Moments of Well-Being

What do you consider to be the challenges of your job?

Our guests are very discerning. At first, that sometimes made me a little nervous. Most want to relax, but some customers want to know everything about the products. So I have to be very knowledgeable. As a trained esthetician, I have many opportunities for professional development. I definitely want to take advantage of that. The award for top graduate comes with a continuing education scholarship. That allows me to pay for continuing education courses, such as the training to become a dermologist, which I’m currently taking.

What do you do to treat yourself to moments of relaxation?

In the evening before going to bed, I take time for a thorough facial skincare routine—with everything that goes with it. My boyfriend knows not to disturb me then. That time is all mine (laughs).

How do you spend your time when you’re not taking care of guests? What do you do in your free time?

Sleeping in. I don’t like getting up early. When I have the day off, I start the day very slowly. I have breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, sit on the patio, and let the sun shine on my face. Most of the time, I also use my days off to run errands here and there. I really enjoy going for walks and riding my bike. I need a little exercise to balance out my job. I used to love playing soccer. My biggest fan was my grandpa, who played soccer himself. Right now, though, it’s hard to fit that in with my work schedule. I’ll definitely start playing again someday.

What’s your favorite spot on the island?

The Achterwasser. On my bike rides, I discover lots of quiet spots that tourists don’t know about. I especially love the sunsets over the Achterwasser.
