Island blogger Marika took a closer look at the island’s wellness hotels and beauty salons and treated herself to some pampering. In this blog, she describes her experiences and shares where wellness on the island is truly wonderful.

Spa Experiences on Usedom

Experiencing wellness on my home island—probably the most wonderful experience for me all year. But for me, wellness also means not only being able to enjoy wonderful treatments, but also the fresh Baltic Sea air, the endless white beach, and the magical light as the sun rises and sets. Usedom has some fantastic wellness hotels and beauty salons to offer, and I had the chance to visit a few of them and let myself be pampered from head to toe.

Strandhotel Heringsdorf - Arrive. Take a deep breath. Relax.

The Strandhotel chose this very motto because these are exactly the words the hosts want their guests to feel—and that’s exactly the feeling I got right away. The assistant hotel manager, Cornelia Siewert, gave me a personal and warm welcome and immediately escorted me to the wellness oasis. A spa bag containing towels, a bathrobe, and slippers had already been left for me in the changing room. I was really happy about that, because, as it turned out, I’d arrived completely unprepared yet again. And it certainly won’t be the last time.

After I got changed, my massage therapist, Violetta, welcomed me right away—she’s such a charming woman. I felt right at home! Violetta immediately showed me the treatment rooms and explained everything in great detail. I was pampered with a fango trio. So, I was very gently coated with a fango wrap, and Violetta was always very attentive to my comfort. Afterward, I was swaddled like a baby on the fango table. The wrap was slowly filled with water at 35 degrees, and for 20 minutes you float as if on cloud nine. Like a baby, I rocked gently as if in a cradle, and I was able to completely unwind and relax. But I also acted like a baby when Violetta slowly and gently unwrapped me from the pack. NO! I’d love to stay lying here all day! But Violetta explained to me that this wouldn’t make any therapeutic sense. I was persuaded. But after the wrap, a wonderful massage was still waiting for me. Finally, a massage with some pressure again—not one of those light, stroking massages. That did me a world of good. Afterward, Violetta ran me a bath. By “bath,” I mean a whirlpool tub with light therapy and 200 massage jets. This massage—or rather, the jets—really put on quite a show. For a moment, I felt like I was on an airport runway. It’s pretty loud at first. The water, however, was pleasantly warm, the lights kept changing, and I let the massage jets work my entire body thoroughly. A wonderful trio that I can truly recommend.

But another highlight was still in store for me. Violetta took me up to the top floor—the panoramic floor, to be exact. There’s a relaxation room with floor-to-ceiling windows, a terrace, and a direct view of the Baltic Sea, as well as a panoramic sauna. At the tea station, I made myself a wellness tea, immediately curled up on a lounger under one of those fluffy blankets, and simply enjoyed the breathtaking view of the sea. It doesn’t get any more relaxing than this! This quote probably fits best here. After I’d come to my senses again, I made my way downstairs to the bathrobe corridor. Passing the fitness room, I reached the outdoor brine pool. This pool, filled with 2% Heringsdorf brine, is kept at a warm 30 degrees and invites you to enjoy a swim all year round. The Heringsdorf iodine brine is extracted from a depth of 408 meters, has a salinity of approximately 4%, and is therefore classified as a medium-strength brine. This brine is effective against skin conditions, disorders of the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory conditions, psychosomatic illnesses, sleep disorders, childhood illnesses, and gynecological conditions. A truly unique selling point for the Strandhotel Heringsdorf. Arrive, take a deep breath, feel at ease—a brief yet very apt description of this historic hotel owned by the Dr. Molik family in Kaiserbad Heringsdorf. This certainly won’t be my last visit here.

Kaiser Spa Hotel zur Post in Bansin—where relaxation is palpable.

Let’s stay in the Imperial Resorts for a moment longer. Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, and Bansin have a wide variety of fantastic wellness hotels to offer. For me, choosing the Kaiser Spa Hotel zur Post was extremely important because I was also eager to meet Mandy Pagel, the 2020 Top 10 Spa Manager of the Year. Mandy is a state-certified and licensed esthetician, massage therapist, makeup artist, and instructor. And that’s not all. She’s the General Spa Manager not just of one hotel, but of three properties within the Rovell Hotels group. Two of them are in Bansin, and one is in the Allgäu region, which she visits at least once a month to make sure everything is running smoothly. It’s a lot of work, but also a wonderful challenge for Mandy, who still looks absolutely radiant while doing it. A spa manager driven by passion and full of dedication—that’s exactly how I got to know Mandy.

The wellness area at the Kaiser Spa Hotel zur Post is quite large; it features a wide variety of treatment rooms, a large indoor-outdoor pool, and even an outdoor cocktail bar. While the cocktail bar is only open during the warmer months, the outdoor pool is open year-round. There are also plenty of lounge chairs here in the garden, so you can escape the hustle and bustle of the beach and just enjoy life. Between the swimming pool and the sauna area, there are additional smaller relaxation rooms, which I really love because it lets you retreat a bit, snuggle up in your bathrobe on the large loungers, and just unwind.

And that’s exactly what I did, because beforehand I was treated to a magnificent Thai massage. Well, “treated” is actually the wrong word, because they really get down to business here. The Thai massage therapist named Nicki completely worked me over. She pressed, pulled, and stretched—a wonderful feeling when the pain finally subsides. After this treatment, I actually felt like I’d been reborn! Afterward, I was able to completely unwind in the floatation tank and just let myself drift. A really great combination. Once again, I was floating on cloud nine, accompanied by soothing music and calming colors in the 35-degree brine bath. The sensation of weightlessness and deep relaxation in this saltwater floatation bath was very unfamiliar to me at first, but after a few minutes, I really enjoyed it. Overall, I felt very comfortable and welcome, so I definitely have to visit the Kaiser Spa again—I was also very impressed by the Private Spa.

An exclusive oasis of well-being in a completely private atmosphere, complete with a whirlpool tub, Finnish sauna, steam room, spa products, and a bottle of champagne and snacks—two hours just for you and your partner, or with your best friend! Actually, that would make a great Christmas gift, wouldn’t it?

Balmer See Hotel Golf & Spa – The Spirit of Balmer

From the imperial resorts, we’re now heading straight into the beautiful countryside of Usedom Island! Specifically, to the small, idyllic village of Balm. For me, it’s the most beautiful area for wellness. Peace. Idyll. Relaxation. Charmingly nestled within the protected natural landscape of the Achterwasser, the Balmer See Hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful bays on the island of Usedom. Even the walk through the narrow little streets, past thatched-roof houses, already has me completely relaxed. Spa Manager Jaqueline Baumann is already waiting for me, and together we explore the Balmer Seele spa.

I was absolutely thrilled by the swimming area with its outdoor pond. Yes, you read that right—not an outdoor pool, but an outdoor pond with a magnificent view of Lake Balm. I didn’t actually use it, though; it was a bit too chilly for me at this time of year. So off to the sauna instead! With a Finnish dry sauna, a soft sauna, two steam saunas, and an infrared sauna, there’s something for everyone, no matter their preferred temperature. The ice grotto offers a unique way to cool off, where you can enjoy a refreshing exfoliation for your skin. The relaxation room here isn’t your typical relaxation room either—it’s a salt relaxation room—not only perfect for unwinding but also good for your health. Something else I hadn’t encountered before is this unique floating lounger from Wavebalance, where you can experience select massage rituals in a whole new dimension. The room’s ambiance has been very carefully designed to help you truly unwind mentally as well. For me, it’s yet another truly magical place.

But now we come to my absolute highlight! The Asia Pavilion! A trip to Asia and back, without any jet lag—that’s something you can probably only find at Balm! In the world of spas across Germany, the Asia Pavilion is truly one of a kind. Freddy—who, by the way, is from Sri Lanka—greets me right outside his palace. Together, we walk through the Sun Gate and leave the island of Usedom behind. The Zen garden accompanies us on our way to the Asia Pavilion and already puts me in the right frame of mind for my time of peace and relaxation. As I enter the Asia Pavilion, the scent of cherry and cedar wood greets me, and I immediately feel that I’ve arrived. Of course, slippers were already waiting for me. Now, a completely different Ayurvedic massage awaits me—one unlike any I’ve experienced before. Freddy not only uses a very specific massage technique but also adapts it to the tension in each person’s body, and you can feel this energy right away. I truly felt as if I were lying on a beach in Sri Lanka and was able to relax completely. That’s not always easy for me.

After this magnificent massage, I was invited to take a seat on a lounger with a direct view of Lake Balmer. Freddy brought me some tea and shared a few anecdotes from his life. He’s a very wise man—he’s a Buddhist—and I immediately noticed how each story prompted me to reflect on myself. In my opinion, good conversations are also part of a truly great wellness experience. Freddy also took the time to show me all the rooms in the Asia Pavilion and explain everything in great detail. There’s even a yoga room—an exciting topic for me, since I’ve unfortunately let my yoga practice slide quite a bit. Freddy demonstrated mainly balance exercises where you really have to look inward to find your focus and maintain your balance.

Right next door, things take a completely different turn! A large, bright room with big massage tables that are almost at floor level, with poles mounted above them. Here in the Asia Pavilion, they also offer Thai massages, using hands and feet. In the next room stands a large, round wooden tub. An authentic walnut tub with an unbeatable view of Lake Balmer. It’s actually suitable for couples, too, which I find quite romantic. Right next door, by the way, there’s also a small wooden sauna. Here, you simply sit inside with just your head sticking out—and, of course, another breathtaking view of Lake Balmer. Herbs are boiled in hot water and poured directly into this wooden sauna until it’s steaming. I’ve never seen anything like it before. For me, this place is simply a true experience and pure pleasure—something I absolutely must experience again and again. Thank you, Freddy, for this wonderful morning.

"Auszeit" by Nancy Haseloff in Ückeritz—a paradise for women

Let’s head back to the center of the island—and this time, we’re not going to a big hotel, but to a small beauty salon with a boutique. Tucked away in Ückeritz, you’ll find this little oasis at Strandstraße 12, on the way to the campground. The welcome is so warm that you immediately feel at home. Nancy is pretty crazy—and yet so endearing. I like people who are authentic and passionate about their work. Nancy really was that crazy—she simply started her own business during the lockdown, and it was definitely worth it! That gives “working from home” a whole new meaning. Together with her husband, Jan Haseloff—who’s responsible for the entire remodel and renovation—she’s created a little magical spot offering facial and foot treatments, as well as a small shopping paradise.

Everything is furnished to a very high standard, and I immediately find myself looking around and browsing everywhere. Now let’s get started! Nancy treats me to a detox facial—wellness for the skin using high-quality products, which are mainly applied and massaged in. I’m lying on a large spa bed, snuggled up in a fluffy blanket, and immediately feel right at home. Nancy is happy to explain each step and which products she’s using, if you’d like. But you can also just close your eyes and relax completely. The soothing wellness music in the background makes it easy to drift off, and the head and neck massage feels incredibly good.

Nancy also recommends a mask that includes light therapy, which is supposed to improve your complexion with regular use. You shouldn’t be claustrophobic, though, because it takes some getting used to at first and you look like an alien—but it’s a truly brilliant invention. I hadn’t heard of this type of cosmetic treatment before, and I’m still totally thrilled by it. Afterward, I treated myself to a foot treatment—in the massage chair, of course—a supremely comfortable wellness pedicure that included exfoliation, callus removal, nail care, and a massage. I’ve already booked more appointments. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

This is me: Usedom's island blogger

My full name is Marika Borowski; I’m 37 years young and was born on the mainland in the Lassaner Winkel region. From the port of Lassan, I’ve always had an unobstructed view of the Lieper Winkel and the Gnitz Peninsula, so I’ve always felt a strong connection to my adopted home of Usedom. I can still remember very well how my parents would take me to the beach in Trassenheide or camping on the Gnitz Peninsula, or how we’d visit our relatives in the town of Usedom. For me, it was always a big deal to tell my school friends that I had relatives who lived on an island. Now I’ve been living on Usedom myself for over 20 years and can already call myself a bit of an island kid. I first trained here to become a hotel specialist and then a hotel manager, and I’ve turned this into my calling.

To be able to tell our visitors to Usedom much more about the island, I set out on a journey of discovery myself and have been documenting all my experiences and discoveries on the island of Usedom in my blog for a good two years now.
