The Cultural Facets of the Island

Whether small and charming or steeped in history, Usedom’s museums and galleries are sure to delight you. The Peenemünde Historical-Technical Museum and the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio, in particular, are known far beyond the island’s borders.

An Interesting History Lesson

At the Peenemünde Historical and Technical Museum, you’ll delve deep into a dark chapter in the history of the island of Usedom. The museum sheds light on the ambivalent history of what was then known as the Peenemünde Army Research Center. Various local history and cultural history museums, such as the Kaffeemühle Museum in Wolgast, Uns Olle Schaul in Zempin, and the museum at the Zinnowitz train station, tell the story of life on the island in the past and bring history to life.

Encounters with the Artist

Some museums are dedicated to a single artist. The Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio almost feels as if ONH had just put down his brush. Time seems to have stood still in this little gem. At the Rungehaus in Wolgast, you’ll learn about the painter Philipp Otto Runge, one of the most important figures of North German Romanticism. Bansin honors its most famous son with the Hans Werner Richter House.

Rotating Art Exhibitions

In Usedom’s galleries, you can admire paintings, prints, sculptures, photography, and ceramics of various styles. The Heringsdorf Art Pavilion, designed by Rügen-based architect Ulrich Müther, is itself a historic building worth seeing. In Zinnowitz, the REFUGIUM Kunst am Meer, the Kunsthaus Villa Meyer, and the Usedomfotos Gallery open their doors to art lovers. The Koserow Art Salon and the Usedom Kaleidoscope focus on regional art.
