A side trip to our Polish neighbors

A trip to the Polish side of the island is a must for many vacationers on Usedom. In the bustling city of Świnoujście, you’ll experience a world of contrast to the imperial resorts on the German side. The hustle and bustle of the city and the allure of the unfamiliar will captivate you.

A vibrant city with many facets

In the 19th century, Swinemünde was the first and largest seaside resort on Usedom. Today, Świnoujście—with a population of about 40,000—is the only “real” city on the island. This port city, with its bustling downtown, wide beach, and historic sights, will captivate you. Join the crowd on the promenade and enjoy the lively atmosphere. In the former resort district, restored seaside villas serve as reminders of the island’s past as a seaside resort.

The modern side of the city

The prefabricated housing estates serve as a reminder of just how badly Swinemünde was destroyed during World War II. In recent years, Swinemünde has experienced a massive wave of modernization and a construction boom. You’ll be amazed by the futuristic new hotels at the end of the promenade.

Unrestricted Travel to Poland

Do you even notice the green border between Ahlbeck and Świnoujście anymore? It wasn’t until Poland joined the Schengen Agreement in 2007 that the former border installations disappeared completely and checks at all border crossings were discontinued.

Typical Swinemünde

  • A modern, bustling port and commercial city
  • Well-preserved resort district with restored seaside villas
  • Mühlenbake, a navigational marker on the West Mole
  • The Kurpark is the city’s green lung
  • Three preserved fortifications that are open to visitors

Excursions and Activities in Świnoujście

You can plan your trip to Swinemünde either with the Usedomer Bäderbahn or on an excursion steamer operated by the Adlerschiffe shipping company. In addition to a leisurely stroll through the city center and along the promenade, the itinerary includes visits to the city’s sights. The Fort Aniola and Fort Gerharda fortifications showcase the city’s defensive side. At the Maritime and Fishing Museum, you’ll learn interesting facts about the city’s history.

Bicycle Tours in Świnoujście

Open Road: Cycle along the promenade that connects the two countries and ride your bike into neighboring Poland. The only reminder of the former border is a sculpture shaped like a bracket. Your bike will also come in handy on a sightseeing tour through the extensive city of Świnoujście.
