Traveling to the Island by Car

The "Sun Island" of Usedom is not car-free, so you can easily travel there in your own car. While on vacation, you can "explore" the island by car or leave it behind every now and then. The train, bus, and bike path networks on Usedom are very well developed.

How to Travel to the Island

Directions from the West (from Hamburg)

If you’re coming from Hamburg or heading to the northern part of the island (Peenemünde, Karlshagen, Trassenheide, Zinnowitz, Zempin, Koserow, Loddin, Ückeritz), it’s advisable to take the Wolgast bascule bridge, the Peene Bridge. At the Lübeck interchange, take the A20 toward Rostock. Take Exit 27 (Gützkow) onto the B111 to Wolgast, and then continue on to the island of Usedom. Be sure to check the bridge opening times!

Directions from the South (from Berlin)

If you’re coming from Berlin or heading to a destination in the southern part of the island (Usedom, Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, Bansin, Achterland), take the A11 and then the A20 to the Pasewalk-Süd exit (26). From there, continue on the B 109 toward Anklam (B109/B110) and finally across the Zecherin Bridge. Please note the bridge opening hours here as well.

By car through the Swine Tunnel directly to the island

In addition to the Peene Bridge and the Zecherin Bridge, the Swine Tunnel in Swinemünde has offered you another option since June 30, 2023, to reach the island of Usedom without taking a ferry. The tunnel, which runs beneath the Swine River, connects the Polish part of the island of Usedom with the island of Wollin. The drive through the 1.8-kilometer-long tunnel is free of charge.

Here's How to Avoid Traffic Jams

During peak season, there can sometimes be traffic jams on the way here. It’s often a matter of timing: Many accommodations aren’t ready for check-in until 2:00 p.m. Shortly before that, around 12:30 p.m., traffic can get heavy at the bottlenecks of the Zecherin and Wolgast bridges. If possible, avoid the bridge opening time at 12:45 p.m. by arriving earlier or later. Choose a weekday. Stay up to date by listening to the radio:

  • Ostseewelle, Frequency 103.3
  • Antenne Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, frequencies 103.8, 105.1, 105.4
  • NDR 1 Radio MV, Frequency 89.0
