A paradise for nature lovers and hikers

Do you prefer to spend your vacations in nature? Do you prefer to skip the spectacular sights and instead value peace and solitude? The Thurbruch will captivate you with its expansive landscape and unique flora and fauna.

Where glacier tongues once melted

Did you know that the last Ice Age shaped the island of Usedom? As they moved south, the glaciers piled up the gently rolling hills of Usedom’s hinterland. Where a glacier tongue once came to a halt and melted, the vast, marshy plain of the Thurbruch formed over thousands of years.

Where aurochs once grazed

The lowland bog area takes its name from its former inhabitants. Until the 13th century, aurochs roamed the marshes and forests here. “Thur” is the Slavic name.

Land Reclamation Ordered by the Prussian King

The fact that you can explore the Thurbruch on your wanderings is thanks to none other than the Prussian King Frederick the Great. In the mid-18th century, he had the marshland drained using drainage ditches and made it suitable for agriculture. Later, the drainage of the Thurbruch was aided by three wind-powered pumping stations. The Kachlin wind-powered pumping station still stands today.

Typical Thurbruch

  • Drainage ditches characterize the vast, flat landscape
  • Meadows, pastures, rapeseed and grain fields as far as the eye can see
  • The Kückelsberg rises at the edge of the Thurbruch
  • Idyllically nestled in a beech forest: Lake Wolgast
  • Lake Gothen and Lake Kachlin frame the Thurbruch
  • For sports enthusiasts: the Baltic Hills Golf Usedom course

Outings and Activities in Thurbruch

The best way to experience the Thurbruch is on foot or by bike. Take a short detour to “Usedom Switzerland” and enjoy a panoramic view of the Thurbruch from the 58-meter-high Kückelsberg. From the observation tower, the view extends to Lake Gothen, the Baltic Sea, and—on a clear day—all the way to the Polish island of Wollin.

Active and Creative Adventures in the Thurbruch

Would you like to get a little active? Then in Korswandt, you can go for a hike around Lake Wolgast or play a round of golf at the Baltic Hills Golf Usedom course. If you’re interested in creative crafts, be sure to visit ceramic artist Daniel Graf at his studio, Tonwerk Keramik.

Bicycle Tours in the Thurbruch

If you pedal hard here, you’ll pick up speed and really cover some ground. That’s because the Thurbruch is flat. Cycle through fields and meadows and along drainage ditches. The rest area at the Kachlin wind-powered pumping station is a great spot for a quick picnic. At the edge of the Thurbruch, however, you’ll find yourself out of breath as you climb up to Kückelsberg. Once at the top, the fantastic view will make it all worth it.

Dining in Thurbruch

Feeling hungry after all that exploring? After a hike around the idyllic Lake Wolgast, we recommend stopping for a bite to eat at Idyll am Wolgastsee. Enjoy regional delicacies such as game and fish, or take a break with coffee and cake. Other places to stop for a bite to eat include the restaurant at the Baltic Hills Golf Course in Korswandt or the Gasthof to’n Eikboom in Dargen.
