On the Promenade of Superlatives

Not only is it Europe’s longest beach promenade, but it also connects the imperial resorts with the Polish part of the island of Usedom. Feel like a quick trip to Świnoujście? Hop on your bike or simply walk across the border.

A Lifeline Connecting Countries

The 12-kilometer-long Europapromenade stretches from Bansin, through Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck, all the way to Swinemünde. Since Poland joined the Schengen Agreement in 2007, the border has been open. You’ll probably hardly even notice the border anymore, as nature has long since reclaimed the border strip. Between Ahlbeck and Swinemünde, only a small gate shaped like a bracket serves as a reminder of the former division.

To the right and left of the promenade

Do you love strolling along the promenade—just like the early spa guests of the 19th century? Is it also about “seeing and being seen” for you? On your promenade walk, you’ll see magnificent seaside resort villas and the piers. A quick detour into the town centers of the imperial resorts is well worth it. Many small boutiques invite you to go on a shopping spree. But now it’s time for a little break, isn’t it? Take a seat at one of the many restaurants and cafés.

Getting some exercise on the promenade

The beach on one side, impressive seaside resort architecture on the other: Can you imagine a more beautiful setting for your jog? Whether you want to go for a stroll, run, walk, or take a bike ride, the cross-border Europapromenade is perfect for your athletic activities. Along the way, you can head to the beach or take a dip in the Baltic Sea to cool off.

Cycling abroad for a few hours

Taking a quick bike ride to Świnoujście for a few hours: For a long time, that wasn’t possible at all. It wasn’t until 2011 that the missing section of the promenade in the forest between Ahlbeck and Świnoujście was completed. It’s well worth planning a bike ride to the lively port city of Świnoujście. Don’t worry: You can also communicate in German on the Polish side and pay with euros or a debit card.
